Who I am

Over a decade from hands-on developer to Head of Engineering at scale. Today I lead a lean 15-person in-house engineering team at Clarion that I built in Poland, powered by Claude Code and agentic tooling to punch above its size. I own the engineering strategy end to end, and I'm the one pushing new AI capability into Clarion as the company opens up to it: Claude Code first, now skills, plugins, connectors and MCP, with our first full agentic workflow next.

What makes me unusual at this level is that I'm still genuinely hands-on at architecture depth. I can design the system, review the HLD and build the team to deliver it. Most leaders at this seniority have drifted from the technical detail. I haven't.

Before Clarion I ran an independent technology consultancy for five years, delivering architecture for clients across pensions, insurance and the charity sector. In that time I architected the identity migration behind a platform serving around six million members, and earlier led the development that consolidated roughly 700 websites into one.

Clarion brought me in on contract, then made me permanent Head of Engineering inside the first year. When the company and the work are right, I commit and I build.

    Apr 2024 — Present

    Head of Engineering

    • Built a lean 15-person engineering team in Poland from scratch, with six direct reports across engineering, QA, CRM, data and architecture, powered by Claude Code and agentic tooling. Full delivery ramp in 3 months, delivery cost halved against the agency model it replaced.
    • Own engineering strategy, architecture direction and governance across the digital transformation portfolio, spanning the Defence & Security and Gaming brands including DSEI, ICE and iGB.
    • Piloting Clarion's AI capability rollout as the company opens up to it: a governed Claude Code pilot first, now expanding into skills, plugins, connectors and MCP, with the first full agentic workflow next. Also shipped Azure AI Search and Content Safety in user-facing products.
    • Designed and ran the partner-to-internal insourcing programme. Own a £1.5M engineering budget plus £1.5M vendor spend, and cut cloud run costs 17%.

    • Architected the omnichannel member experience: a legacy member portal, a new member portal and a new member app (Flutter front-end via an agency, .NET backend built by my team), all sharing the same .NET APIs.
    • Designed the target-state SSO capability on Azure AD B2C: a seamless, just-in-time migration for around 6M members verified via existing credentials at first login, with the legacy portal set to retire once the new portal reaches feature parity.
    • Defined a standardised data access and API strategy for public-facing systems, using identity-led access controls.

    • Built a customer-facing blob upload/versioning API for the Radar product, supporting on-prem, Linux, Windows and SaaS deployments on Kubernetes, with a strong focus on automated testing and the Mediator pattern.
    • Prototyped malware scanning for uploaded assets, standing it down once Microsoft shipped the same capability natively, and explored a Kubernetes/Helm SaaS deployment model as an alternative to the per-customer service.

    • Brought in as in-house Sitecore expert to review an agency-led Sitecore XP 9.1 delivery (Azure PaaS, SXA, Helix), then built the case to insource it, hiring contractors and progressively onboarding 4 delivery teams onto Sitecore.
    • Designed an Azure API layer (Functions, App Services, Cosmos DB) fronted by API Management to integrate a legacy CRM system into modern platforms, and implemented Azure AD B2C SSO with custom policies.
    • Got well underway on replacing the donation platform with Sitecore Commerce, included in the existing license, and delivered bilingual English/Welsh content for compliance.

    • Joined client-side to support and monitor an agency-led Sitecore delivery consolidating around 700 websites into a unified estate, promoted to Senior after a year.
    • When the agency left, became sole developer and delivered a full Sitecore 8.2 to 9.0.2 upgrade solo, on bare-metal servers with a SQL cluster, with limited prior experience.
    • Cut global search response times by 45% through Solr optimisation, and shipped ongoing site improvements working directly with business stakeholders.

    • Optimised the core Hoseasons site: a CSS-only mega nav, a dark premium rebrand, checkout flow streamlining that cut checkout duration by 50%, and Adobe Target experimentation (A/B, MVT, personalisation).
    • Delivered the new Landal UK website alongside a fellow developer, closely matching the design brief.
    • Moved into the team managing the group's other brands (cottages.com and in-house voucher applications) — first exposure to Sitecore, and where my C# experience began.
